I just watched my DVR’ed episode of Samantha Who, the one where she’s protesting the destruction of butterfly habitat. Wasn’t sure if I should be offended or amused. ;-) It certainly was timely

Dear Diary,
Here are my questions to WPZ.  The answers will be verrry interesting.

1. First, I’d be interested in getting details about your rearing process. However, I don’t want to bore you with that. I’ll visit MaryJo at Oregon Zoo’s lab next weekend (THANKS for the referral). Once I have a concrete picture of how things are done, can I provide you a quick synopsis of their process, and ask you how yours is different?

Today I made an appointment to visit MaryJo at the Oregon Zoo.  I’ll see her on May 4 for a tour of her lab.

Lorre from Woodland Park Zoo contacted me first and offered to help me.  She also forwarded my email to MaryJo. 

People in conservation are generally helpful.  But that’s no surprise, is it?

Finally

Finally decided on a template design.  It isn’t perfect, but it’s fine for its purpose.  The right column fonts aren’t the best.  I may spring for the $20 to WordPress so I can change the font.  I took the banner picture at Woodland Park Zoo “Butterflies & Blooms” last year.  Looks like a Dryas julia.  Feel free to help me out in comments if I’m wrong.

I didn’t think a school project could become so important to me so quickly.

My initial plan was to visit two butterfly exhibits in the Seattle area, and compare them in terms of how their exhibits were geared toward butterfly conservation and endangered species work.  Finding limited information on this subject here in Seattle, (and with the help of our course TA, thanks Karen) I found several sources in Southwestern Washington and Oregon that are heavily involved in butterfly conservation work.
